Everything you need to know about obtaining a RFC Tax ID in Mexico

What is a RFC Number?

An RFC ID is the Mexican tax identification number issued by the Servicio de Administración Tributaria or SAT in Mexico. Both individuals and businesses must have an RFC ID to engage in business activities in Mexico. An RFC ID serves also as the de facto corporate registration number in Mexico.

It permits the filing of taxes, importation of goods, selling on Amazon and e-commerce platforms, employment of workers, applications for product compliance and government registrations, purchase property, sign lease agreements, and countless other commercial and private activities. Generally, a tax ID cannot be obtained by a foreigner unless a legal entity or foreign entity registration is obtained in Mexico. For individuals, a foreigner can only obtain an RFC ID if the person obtains a Mexican temporary or permanent residence visa.
